To enhance education and research in graduate schools, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) has started supporting Initiatives for Attractive Education in Graduate Schools in cooperation with the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS). For the first year, 338 proposals from 147 universities were screened, and 97 proposals from 45 universities were adopted.

The educational theme we applied for in the Initiatives for Attractive Education in Graduate Schools, namely the Core Program to Promote Talented Students for the Future in Information Science, was selected as one of the national target programs in scientific fields. In information science, five institutions including our Graduate School of Information Science were selected for the first term.

The Initiatives for Attractive Education in Graduate Schools are intended to enhance educational functionality by promoting young researchers who can adapt flexibly to a changing needs of society by supporting assertive and distinctive programs as gattractive education in graduate schoolsh starting from the governmentfs fiscal year of 2005.

Our program will strengthen educational content and broaden related projects while following the educational policy we have conventionally practiced.

In this program, we have set three major objectives and eight specific action plans:

  1. Improvement of core curriculum coursework to provide a strong foundation for researchers and engineers.
Action Plan 1: Enhancement of curriculum
    Action Plan 2: On-demand lectures
  2. Promotion of four projects to cultivate leaders of society.
Action Plan 3: Project for excelent students
Action Plan 4: Project for community development
Action Plan 5: Project for collaborative laboratories
Action Plan 6: Project for international students' exchange
  3. Improvement of flexible educational infrastructure through systematic support
Action Plan 7: Systematic support of faculty development.
Action Plan 8: Development of user friendly syllabus

With all these action plans, we will make every effort to found a prominent center of graduate school education to promote prospective young researchers.

Since its foundation in 1992, NAISTfs professors and students have been devoted to the formation of a new-style Japanese graduate school. We have strengthened the research environment and been selected as one of the best 20 universities of the 21st Century COE program. NAIST has also been designated as a Spcially Selected Industry-Goverment-Academia Collaboration Group in Japannese Universities by MEXT. Furthermore, we have been selected for this current initiative. These three allow us to pursue our missions of gCreation of Wisdomh, gFeedback of Wisdomh and gInheritance of Wisdomh, respectively.

We are determined to make every possible effort to promote of these two biggest projects, the Initiative program and the 21st Century COE program, expecting for further enthusiastic research and educational activities.
