Details on the entrance examination

Procedure on the day of examination

The process on the entrance examination is as follows. II) and III) will take about 30 minutes in total.

I) Registration
II) Math examination
III) Professionalism and research related examination

I) Registration

Enter the online meeting room by webex meetings from the link at the online entrance examination site that we confirmed in advance. First, the receptionist will confirm the connection and your identity. At the same time, the receptionist will ask you about the status of the examination (exclusive application, concurrent application, first choice, etc.). After that, please wait until math interviewers enter the meeting room and start the following math examination.

II) Math examination

You will take an oral examination of mathematics for about 12 minutes. Please write the answer on a sketchbook in front of the camera and explain it. More details are described in this video(mp4).

Once the math exam is completed, the math interviewers will leave the online meeting room. After that, please wait until the interviewers in charge of specialization and research will enter the room.

III) Professionalism and research related examination

Interviewers will enter the room and conduct the interview on your professionalism and research. This examination takes about 12 minutes.

We will ask questions related to information science considering your submitted essay and majored field.

(1) Contents of Examination

Examinees are evaluated as follows.(-> Examination procedures)

1. Oral examination on questions of mathematic

Examinees are given two math questions (one questions each in algebra and analysis).

Exam coverage
Algebra From Chapter 1 to Chapter 8 in the following textbook:
Gilbert Strang, Introduction to Linear Algebra, Fifth Edition, Wellesley-Cambridge Press.
It is equivalent to Chapter 1 to Chapter 7 if you have the fourth edition.
Analysis From Chapter 1 to Chapter 15 of the following textbook:
Serge Lang, A First Course in Calculus, Springer.

2. Questions regarding the research proposal and areas of information science relevant to the examinees' area of specialization

Examinees submit their research proposal on "Research progress by now (graduation dissertation etc.)" and "The research field/project that I want to work on at NAIST" together with the application forms. On the day of the examination, we will ask questions about the research proposal and what they learned at the undergraduate institution.

(2) Evaluation criteria

1. In the interview, basic academic ability, enthusiasm, and potential as a researcher will be evaluated comprehensively.
2. Examinees' English ability will be evaluated based on TOEIC or other scores. We accept English scores other than TOEIC scores. Please refer to the application requirements information for the scores that can be accepted.

Laboratory assignment in Division of Information Science

At Division of Information Science, for the Fall 2022 Admission and the Spring 2023 Admission, successful applicants will be allocated to a laboratory by the following procedure.

(1) Laboratory placement survey

  • At the time of application, you will be asked to select 5 laboratories from 1st choice to 5th choice.

(2) Laboratory assignment notification

  • Upon consideration of the entrance examination results and laboratory choices, we will notify successful applicants of their allocated laboratory by the Enrollment Confirmation Form submission deadline.
  • Notification may be delayed in cases of Collaborative Laboratory placement
  • Depending on laboratory situations, you may not be assigned to any of the laboratories you requested. Even if you are not assigned to any of the laboratories, it will not affect the decision of your adoption to NAIST at all.
  • After the notification of laboratory assignment, if a vacancy occurs in a laboratory for which you were initially not assigned to, the assignments will be updated for the relevant successful applicants and they will be notified accordingly

(3) Post-admission questionnaire

  • The laboratory that you are finally assigned to is decided based on an additional questionnaire after enrollment, taking into consideration the capacity of each laboratory. In this second questionnaire, if you request the laboratory you are assigned to after the first survey, you will definitely be assigned to that laboratory. On the other hand, if the laboratory you are assigned to after the first survey is not your first choice, if there is a vacancy, you may be assigned to the first or higher choice in the second survey.
  • In the post-admission questionnaire, you may choose a laboratory as your first choice other than the one to which you have been assigned.
