The wireless communications research community is pursuing a disruptive evolution from 4G to 5G in the 10 years. 5G aims to provide up to 1000x times higher data rates and throughputs than the current 4G system. Multi-view video plus depth (MVD) based 3D video communications are seen as a strong candidate killer application for future 5G services. This talk will briefly review a historical development of wireless communications technologies followed by a discussion of a few promising physical-layer 5G candidate techniques. MVD-based 3D communications over wireless networks will be discussed in detail. The talk will also elaborate on the application of glasses-free 3D video communications to the domain of telemedicine and telehealth.
