Mental State Evaluation from Heart Rate Variability for Readiness of Driver for Request to Intervene

A user of automated driving system (ADS) at level 3 needs to respond to Request-to-Intervene (RTI) to the driving system. However, the user is not necessarily ready to receive the authority after a period of time of automated driving.

The previous work estimated the drivers’ mental states by analyzing some physiological indices. In this thesis, we aim to evaluate the mental state of users’ by measuring their heart rate and by calculating some indices of heart rate variability (HRV).

We collect users HRV data in three conditions which are manual driving, driving with ADS and being a passenger. As a result, the mental states are considered different between conditions by using statistic test. Moreover, the indices were different depending on the driving conditions suggesting the possibility of detecting the readiness for RTI.
