０、700年代（奈良時代）創業、日本最古の水引御職司が1200年以上守る「伝統水引」
“Traditional mizuhiki” has been kept by the oldest muzuhiki artisans since their initiation in the 8th century (Nara Period).

１、水引の起源は、西暦６０８年頃聖徳太子の遣隋使が持ち帰った返礼のギフトに結ばれた紐にあるとされ、水引を縒る時くわえた乙女の“口紅"から紅白になったと言われています。
It is said that mizuhiki has its origin in the ribbon on the gift that China gave to Shotoku-taishi (Japanese politician) in about 608 and that its combination of red and white originates in the lipstick a girl who knotted the ribbon.

２、おみくじを神社に結ぶ、ギフトにリボンを結ぶなど、古くから国内外で結ぶ行為は人々の縁への祈りを込めなされてきました。
In all ages and cultures, tying knots has always represented a hope to promote connections between people, such as a ribbon on gift or omikuji at shrines.

３、水引は1４00年以上経た今も、実際に日本で使用されている世界的にも歴史あるラッピングスタイルです。
Mizuhiki is a very traditional style of wrapping that is still in practice even though it is over fourteen hundred years since it was invented.

４、正式には、お品物の上に和紙“手漉き奉書紙”(古くは金のように高価でした)で覆い、その上に“水引”を結ぶ事が「とても大切な人への日本のギフトスタイル」です。
Officially, it is a Japanese gift style used for very important people, which involves wrapping a gift with handmade hosho, which was as expensive as gold in the past and tying a “mizuhiki” knot on it.

５、水引は当初“天皇や貴族”だけが使用許可のある重要なもので“奉書”も武家社会の「政府専用用紙」として厳重に管理されていました。
The use of mizuhiki was very strictly supervised as a special style only for the imperial family, and in the samurai society the use of hosho was limited as a tradition that only the government could use.

６、それほど貴重で高級なものだったため、”とても大切に思っている高貴な方”へのラッピングには、必ずと言っても良いほど使用されました。
Mizuhiki and hosho were so precious and expensive that they were a steady way of sending a gift to “very important people with modesty.”

７、江戸末頃には町人でも大金持ちが使えるようになりましたが、一般への使用解禁は明治頃からで、それまでは貴族・武家しか許されませんでした。
At the end of the Edo Periods, ordinary but extremely affluent people start to use, but till people got able to use them freely in the Meiji Period, only aristocrats and samurais are allow to use them.

８、明治から解禁になった水引包装は、昭和初期には生産が間に合わなくなり、
京都の百貨店高島屋が「印刷」の「熨斗紙」を発表すると、あっという間に「印刷もの」が大衆に流行りました。
After mizuhiki is popularised in the Meiji Period, demand overwhelmed production at the beginning of the Showa Period, and as soon as Takashimaya, departmental store of Kyoto, produced the printed version of mizuhiki called noshigami, it spread very widely.

９、そして高価な「奉書・水引」の正式包装は、古くから使用してきた“名家・旧家”だけが用いるようになりました。 Consequently, the orthodox wrapping of mizuhiki and hosho is now used only by noble and old families that has used them for hundreds of years.

10、日本の“贈答品”は正式には「水引をかける」為、現在でも本物の名家・旧家は「大切な贈答品」を全国から京の最古の職方に送ってこられます。
In Japan, the official way of sending gifts is using mizuhiki, so currently authentic noble families anywhere in Japan ask the oldest artisans in Kyoto to wrap their “important gifts” with mizuhiki.

11、職司は贈答品に「奉書・水引・筆耕」をし、旧家へお届けします。
Artisans wrap the gifts with mizuhiki, hosho and hikko and afterwards send them back to the families.

12、奈良時代より現在まで宮家の様々なこのような奉職をしてきました御職方は、京に現存する最古の“地誌(生活文化の歴史書)”「庸州府誌」に「水引」として唯一名が出ております。
Artisans, who have devoted their life to such works, just appear on the oldest historical book that still exists named ”Yoshuhushi” as a name of “mizuhiki.”

-14：古より日本の旧家・名家では、贈答品を
日本最古の職方へ送り依頼し、日本最高格式の贈答品包装仕様である「奉書包み＋水引結び」「筆耕」にて体裁を整えたものを、1つ１つ「広蓋」「袱紗」で持参しプレゼントしておりました。
For ages, noble and old families of Japan have asked the oldest artisans to decorate their gifts with “hosho-wrapping,” “mizuhiki-knotting” and “hikko,” which are the Japanese high-end style of wrapping, and present them by hand using “hirobuta” (elegant case) and “hukusa” (Japanese fabric).

-15：最高格の「鮑結び」と最も歴史ある「紅白」水引の為、金額を問わず、不祝儀以外のお金をお渡しする時全てに使用可能。
Because of the supreme knotting of “awabi-musubi” and the oldest knotting of “rouge mizuhiki,” it is available to assign money of any amount as long as it is celebration.
