title: Inverse Lighting for Near-field
abstract: Inverse lighting is a technique to estimate the lighting of the scene from captured images. Lighting estimation is useful for many applications including image synthesis, shape estimation, and identification of surface characteristics. Inverse lighting consists of two problems: inverse light positioning and inverse emittances. Most conventional methods for solving these problems assume far-field light sources for simplicity. However, in real environments, this assumption is not satisfied if the light sources are located in near field. In this work, we tackle the inverse lighting problems with near-field light sources. For inverse light positioning, we propose to use a single image in which a clear hollow sphere is captured assuming a single point light source in the three-dimensional (3D) space. Under this assumption, the image has two highlights on the sphere, each of which corresponds to the ray from the light source to the camera reflected on it. Based on these two rays, triangulation estimates its 3D position. For inverse emittances, we propose to use a diffuse reflection board captured in multiple images from various positions. Using a 4D light field as the model of the emittances, we can estimate it by decomposing the intensities observed on the board. Since the intensities contain emittances from all directions, a fewer images are sufficient for this estimation.
