title: Cognitive and Affective Aspects of Autism Spectrum Disorder
abstract: Socialization and communication are important factors influencing human social life, but the number of people who have trouble with social skills and communication have recently been increasing for a variety of reasons. It has been noted that the extreme case of these traits is autism spectrum disorders, a genetic disorder characterized by social interaction and communication difficulties, as well as unusually narrow, repetitive interests. One of the central psychological themes in autism is empathizing, which is a set of cognitive and affective skills. In this presentation, I present cognitive and affective components of autism spectrum disorders. In the case of cognitive component, I proposed an iPad application NOCOA+ that uses multiple modalities to help users improve their communication and socialization abilities. I confirmed a method for predicting the autism spectrum quotient values by using NOCOA+, examined the effect of modality differences, and evaluated the effectiveness of computer-based intervention. In the case of affective component, using the Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count dictionaries, I compared narrative story of children with autism spectrum disorders to those with typical development. For classification, using linguistic cues and prosody, I analyzed the important feature sets and their effects on accuracy. The pilot studies suggest that my method can be used to effectively distinguish between autism spectrum disorders and typical development.
