The One Laptop per Child project (OLPC) is an ambitious and innovative non-profit initiative that aims to build and distribute millions of low-price laptops to young students in the developing world. While technologically driven and originally billed as the "$100 laptop," the project is primarily educational in its goals. Working toward its goal of improving education through technology, OLPC has adopted a strong focus on the use of free and open source software. This talk will introduce OLPC -- the organization -- and the XO-1 -- its first laptop now entering early-stage mass production. After this introduction, the talk will examine the project's commitment to free and open source software in terms of the project's education, development, and social change agenda.

OLPCは発展途上国の小・中学生に低価格でノート型パソコンをミリオン 単位で提供することを目的とした大胆で革新的な非営利団体です。この プロジェクトは高技術を搭載した「100ドルパソコン」を作ろうと始まっ たものですが、私たちの第一の目的は教育です。より良い教育をテクノ ロジーを通じて提供することを目的する中、OLPCはオープン・フリーソ フトウェアの使用を重要視しています。この講演ではOLPCという組織に ついて、そしてXO-1という現在初期生産が行われているパソコンについ て、まずご紹介した後、このプロジェクトの目的とする教育、発展、社 会変化にオープン・フリーソフトウェアを使おうとするプロジェクトの 姿勢について考えていきます。

講演者の履歴：
Benjamin Mako Hill is a technology and intellectual property researcher, activist, and consultant. He is currently a Senior Researcher at the MIT Sloan School of Management, a Fellow at the MIT Center for Future Civic Media, and an adviser and contractor for the One Laptop per Child project. He has been a leader, developer, and contributor to the Free and Open Source Software community for more than a decade as part of the Debian and Ubuntu projects. He is the author of several best-selling technical books, and a member of the Free Software Foundation board of directors. Hill has a Masters degree from the MIT Media Lab.
