Presentation Skills in English


講義内容

The purpose of this course is to teach you how to prepare, rehearse, and deliver a presentation to an international audience of colleagues in your field. Each student will be required to deliver a 10 to 15 minute presentation on a topic from their research field, and to answer questions from their colleagues in a ten minute question and answer period following the presentation. There will be ample time to rehearse the presentations, and the final presentation will be videotaped. (Note that the first and second presentation are on the same topic). Issues to be discussed in the class include:

 1. Introduction to Giving Scientific Presentations
 2. Purposes of Scientific Presentations
 3. Preparing the Presentation
   a. Analyzing your Audience and Purpose
   b. Remembering the limitations for your presentation
   c. Summarizing the Content
   d. Preparing the visual displays and graphic aids
 4. Rehearsing the Presentation
   a. Is the presentation coherent?
   b. Does the information flow smoothly?
 5. Delivering the Presentation
   a. Nervous is normal
   b. Your voice
   c. Your body
 6. After the Presentation (The Question and Answer Period)

教科書

No particular texts are required for this course. The presentation itself, however, will require the use of OHP’s and videotaping and playback equipment.

成績評価方法及び基準

Evaluation is based on the student’s ability to present a coherent, logical, clear scientific presentation in front of an audience of peers. Evaluation sheets are handed out and filled in by both the teacher and the students for each presentation. Attendance is mandatory and failure to make the first and second presentation will result in the student receiving NG (No Grade), whereby no credit will be given for the course.
